Look, fact is MGMT came out a while before EOTS. But the genesis of Empire of The Sun came from a caloboration of two veterens of the Aussie music industry from very well respected bands: Indie rock group 'The Sleepy Jackson' and successful techno-pop/house band Pnau. If you listen to the various works of both these bands, you can see how they arrived at the EOTS sound, with Luke's catchy vocal melodies and Nick's skill with electronic production. Also they're much older than the MGMT boys.
